We have been learning about Louis Braille in History. Here are some interesting facts.

Did you Know?

  • Louis was born in France near Paris.
  • His father was a saddler and he also made leather shoes.
  • Louis injured his left eye and lost his sight in that eye while he was playing with his father’s awl. Some time later his other eye became infected and he became totally blind.
  • He went to a school in Paris for blind children.
  • He invented an alphabet which was easier to read than the raised letters that were used. His alphabet was based on using a combination of 6 dots.
  • His Braille Alphabet was not accepted at first, he used to teach other students how to use it in secret.
  • Louis became a teacher.
  • His Braille Alphabet is used throughout the world.
