Moon Landing

Posted on October 22nd, 2010 in Ms. Doran by Mrs. Doran  Tagged

We have been learning about the first moon landing.

In July 1969, three american astronauts travelled to the moon in their spaceship called Apollo 11. Their names were Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins and Neil Armstrong.

It took them three days to reach the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon in a special landing craft called Eagle. Michael Collins stayed in Apollo 11 to look after it. They had to wear special spacesuits to give them air and heat.

Neil Armsrong stepped onto the moon first. When he stepped off the ladder he said “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. They took photos and they collected rocks and dust to bring back  to Earth.

Millions of people watched the moon landing on television.

You can learn more about the moon landing on this website ~ http://www.kidport.com/REFLIB/Science/MoonLanding/MoonLanding.htm

S.A.L.T. and Anger Poems

Posted on October 22nd, 2010 in Ms. Doran by Mrs. Doran  Tagged
We have been learning to add S.A.L.T. to our problems. When we have a problem with our friends or others we try to sort our problem out ourselves first by adding S.A.L.T.

S.A.L.T. means we:

STOP and ask ourselves do we need to cool down, can I talk to this person and do I need to ask them to cool down.

ASK questions ~ what has happened?, what is wrong?, are you alright?

LISTEN to each other, don’t interupt, listen for the feelings.

TALK to each other, take responsibility for my actions, apologise if you should, find a good solution to the problem.

We wrote some anger poems. These poems tell how we feel when we are angry. These are two of our poems written by April and Bonnie.

Maths Trail

Posted on October 17th, 2010 in Ms. Hughes by Mrs. Doran  Tagged

We enjoyed Maths week!

We went on a Maths trail around the school.

We found circles on the wall at the bottom of the middle stairs.

There were 5 circles. They were red, yellow, blue, black and white.

We went outside and found more circles in the playground. They were red, yellow, red and white. We counted all the circles too. Some were big and some were small.

On the court we continued the trail…

Look at us!

School Planning Day 2010-2011.

In common with all other primary schools we are allocated one day during the school year to allow the whole staff to plan together for the coming year. In order to minimise disruption for parents we have decided to take this day on Monday Nov. 1st (ie the Monday after the Halloween Break). As a result all children will return to school on Tuesday Nov 2nd.

Thank you,

P Gately (Principal).

Maths Week- Oct 11th-15th.

Posted on October 12th, 2010 in Latest News by Mr. Gately  Tagged

This week we are having some extra fun with calculations and problems. Classes from infants to 6th are following “Maths Trails” around the school and trying to solve the clues as they go. The senior classes  have also entered a competition in the school to see who can complete a sheet of “Brain Busters”. Why don’t you try this one: How can you make 100 using seven 4s and the addition(+) sisn only? We will print the answer next week.

These are girls from Ms. Shannon’s Fifth class following the Maths Trail:

Footballers Reach Semi-Final.

Posted on October 11th, 2010 in Sport by Mr. Gately  Tagged

For the second year in a row our gallant girls have reached the Rackard League semi-final following a hard earned, but deserved victory over Loreto Gorey. The match began with the Mercy girls playing into a medium breeze, so to get an early goal from the supreme “poacher” Elizabeth Connors was a great tonic. She followed this up with a second green flag a few minutes later. However this Loreto team hadn’t reached a quarter final without being able to fight their corner and they soon replied with two goals of their own from their small, but elusive forwards. Mercy replied with another goal from Caoimhe O Sullivan , but again Loreto hit back and at half time the sides were deadlocked.

The second half was a close affair, but thanks to a few excellent points from Sarah Murphy, Aoife Kelly and Connors again, the John’s Road girls opened up a good lead, but they needed every score as Gorey kept up the pressure right to the end with the final score reading: Mercy 4-6 and Loreto 4-1. Again this was a great team performance with the 5 backs Ciara Rafter, Ciara Cullinane, Aoife O Dwyer, Chloe Keeling and Caoimhe O Keeffe all working very hard for the full game. As ever Shannon Carthy was brilliant in goal, making several saves and clearances, especially in the second half. At mid-field Niamh Buckley and Sarah Murphy worked tirelessly and their hard work was carried on by all the forwards, including Clara O Doherty, Caoimhe O Sullivan and Amy Ryan who kept the ball moving towards goal with great effort and skill. Subs Hannah Malone and Kate Freyne  fitted in seemlessly when they came on and both will be even better players next year.

Mercy Footballers March On

Posted on October 6th, 2010 in Sport by Mr. Gately  Tagged

Following a well deserved victory against our near neighbours Scoil Mhuire, Coolcotts our girls football team has qualified for the quarter finals of the Rackard League. This match was played in difficult windy conditions, luckily we played with the wind in the first half and built up a good lead through great scores from Elizabeth Connors, Sarah Murphy and Aoife kelly, ably assisted by the hard working Clara O Doherty who set up several scores and combined with excellent defending from Chloe Keeling and Caoimhe O Keeffe. In the second half we came under more pressure and here the midfielders Sarah Murphy and Niamh Buckley worked tirelessly and our fullback line of Aoife Dwyer, Ciara Cullinane and Ciara Rafter came into their own. As usual Shannon Carthy in goal was as safe as houses and she made several important clearances. As well as that Caoimhe O Sullivan, Amy Ryan and Sinéad Cuddihy helped out their defence when needed and were also on hand at the the other end of the pitch.

Each one of our substitutes also got to play and Kate Freyne, Kate Redmond-Browne, Jemma Wilders,Sammy-Jo Mc Donagh, Jodie Kent,Clodagh Bruen, Rachel Curran, Margaret Connors and Hannah Malone all contributed to a great victory. This win, combined with victories against Kennedy Park and Tagmon, means that we qualify as group winners and we now await the runners-up from another group in the quarter finals. In the meantime training will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school and on Tuesdays at lunch time for fourth class.

Making Maps ~ Hillside Green

Posted on October 4th, 2010 in Ms. Doran by Mrs. Doran  Tagged

We drew a map of “Hillside Green” from our story “Betty’s Banger”. We drew the library, the school, the hospital, the cinema and the houses. Betty passed these buildings when she was driving to her house.
