Christmas Cribs

Posted on December 18th, 2009 in Ms. Doran by Mrs. Doran  Tagged

We made a Christmas nativity scene. Mary, Joseph, Jesus and the Angel were made from clay. We also made a clay manger for the Baby Jesus. The crib is made from a cereal box and lollipop sticks. We had great fun making and painting our Nativity Scene.

Christmas Candle Holders

We made thumb pots in art using clay. We started with a ball of clay. Then we stuck in our thumb and pulled the sides out. We made sure a night light would fit in our pot. When they were dry we painted them. They will make lovely Christmas presents:)

Mercy’s Got Talent

Posted on December 17th, 2009 in Latest News by Mr. Gately  Tagged

Lots of talent…… In the last 2 weeks we have had some great successes in local and national competitions. First up was Sara Choncaka from Ms. Hill’s class who was a prize-winner in the Credit-Union Poster Competition. Sara has a wonderful artistic talent. Next up was another artist in Ms. Shannon’s class, Chloe Keeling. Chloe was the winner of a family ticket to see the musical “Oliver” in a colouring competition. Well done Chloe. Next up was Bonnie-Neiland Stuart from Ms. Hughes class who was chosen from many entries to have her beautiful re-cycled christmas Apple bookdecoration on display in the Library- Bonnie also won a prize for her efforts. Finally to put the icing on the cake we had a surprise visit fron Henry Mc Keen from Newstalk Radio to present Hazel Devereux from Ms. Hill’s class with first prize (out of entries from all over Ireland) in their poetry competition. Hazel’s poem “A Cozy Christmas” won her and her whole class vouchers for Byrne’s World of Wonder and a trip to Dublin to see the “Cinderella” Pantomime. Hazel will undoubtedly appear in print again in the future, another author from Wexford. Listen to interviews with Hazel and others on the “Seán Montcrief Show” on Newstalk on Friday Dec. 18th or you can tune in to a podcast of this by going onto the “Newstalk” website. More news soon about another writing competition concerning a certain principal who starts to act very strangely indeed….

Recycled Christmas Cards

Posted on December 10th, 2009 in Green Flag by Mrs. Doran  Tagged

As part of our Green School we are busy making recycled Christmas cards. We will not give Christmas cards to our friends in our class. Instead we will make one card each from recycled material and teacher will draw cards out of a hat near Christmas. This helps to reduce waste and trees being cut down to make paper and card.

Junior Achievement

Posted on December 8th, 2009 in Ms. Doran by Mrs. Doran

On Friday 4th December we finished our Junior Achievement lessons with Aideen. The theme for our five weeks was “Our Community”. We found out what a community is and about productivity, government, taxes and decision making. We were not to sure about having to pay taxes when we get older!! There was great fun when we were making donuts…we discovered that assembly line production is much more efficient that unit production. Unfortunately we were only making paper donuts, so we could not eat them afterwards 🙁

On our last day Aideen presented us with our certificates.

We have finished our clay owls. When the clay dried we painted them and then we glued feathers on to them. We think they look really cool.

The magical Christmas tree

Posted on December 8th, 2009 in Ms. Hughes by Mrs. Doran

We really enjoyed the Christmas play in the Art’s Centre.

We saw Santa, the elves and the magical Christmas tree. The Dark Queen wanted to cut down the magical Christmas tree and put an end to Christmas forever. We didn’t like the Dark Queen but we loved Santa and the elves because they saved Christmas.

Yesterday we put up our magical Christmas tree in Room 6. Come and see it!

Project ~ Owls

Posted on December 7th, 2009 in Ms. Doran by Mrs. Doran

We made projects based on Owls. We found out lots of interesting things.

Did you know?

  • When owls fly they do not make any sound.
  • Owls can turn their heads nearly all the way round. This is because they can’t move their eyes.
  • There are many species of owls, such as ~ Barn Owls, Snowy Owls, Great Horned Owls, Long Eared Owls, Tawny Owls, Nightjar Owls, Short Eared Owl, The European Eagle Owl and many more.
  • Owls rely mostly on their sense of hearing.
  • They are nocturnal birds.
  • Owls swallow their prey whole. They regurgitate the bones, fur and other parts they can’t digest as a pellet.
  • Owls eat small rabbits, mice, fish, shrews, and other small animals.
  • A baby owl is called an owlet.
