Well done to all the athletes from the Mercy School that competed in the Bree Sports on Wednesday 15th May 2013.  The boys and girls did

extremely well with most competitors qualifying for semi finals.  It was a great day, the children had a picnic on the banks of the track and even the

sun made a very brief appearance.  I am proud to report that everyone was mannerly and courteous to all and were great ambassadors for their

school.  With over one thousand athletes competing we returned home with  four medals.

Julia Dempsey 1st in U14 400m

Eve Hession 1st in U13 Long Jump

Roisin O Reilly 2nd in U12 High Jump

Sabia Doyle 3rd in U10 100m sprint

A huge thank-you to the parents that travelled on the day to help out as without them it would be impossible to attend the sports day.

Thank you to Linda Keeling, Senan O Reilly,Aileen Gunning,Elma White and  Ann Gilshinan.  We also had great support from the Penwells, Nolans, Alasdair Joss and Conor Kavanagh.

Well done everyone you should be all very proud.

For the 4th year in a row we entered a team in the annual Wexford Schools’ Cup golf competition in Rosslare Golf Club. Many thanks to John Meyler who accompanied the girls on the day and also arranged coaching and practice in advance. The girls really enjoyed the experience and played very well. Perhaps we will see some of them continue on with this great sport after they leave the school.

Soccer

This year again we are very grateful to Richie Browne from Wexford Celtic for coaching the soccer team. We are delighted and very proud that the girls won the final of the Wexford Town tournament and then went on to the South Leinster finals in Arklow. Here they exceeded all expectations by winning all their games to reach the final. Unfortunately they were pipped at the post when their opponents scored with 8 seconds to go in the match. It was very disappointing to lose so narrowly, but Richie and the girls should be very proud of their achievements. Already we are planning for next year.

Rackard League Update

Posted on October 14th, 2012 in Latest News,Sport by Mr. Gately  Tagged

Following wins against Bree, Horeswood and Glynn-Barntown the Mercy girls are currently going very well in the Rackard League. The match against Horeswood in Campile was played in difficult conditions and we had to play into a strong breeze in the first half. Thanks to some excellent defending from all 13 players we were level at half-time and with the aid of some early scores in the second-half we emerged winners by 5 points. The match against Glynn-Barntown was a home match and we emerged comfortable winners after a great team performance. All subs also managed to get on for some of the match and they will all benefit from the experience. Our last match is against Fethard and again it will be at home. If we manage to emerge victorious we will be in the county semi-final for the 4th year in a row. Well done to all the players for their efforts so far, but the toughest matches have yet to come.

Historic Win For Mercy Girls.

Posted on November 9th, 2011 in Latest News,Sport by Mr. Gately  Tagged

On Wednesday night November 9th the Mercy Girls football team made history by winning the Rackard League Roinn B title for the very first time. The match against a gallant Ballygarret team took place under lights in St. Patrick’s Park Enniscorthy and it was a thrilling spectacle with superb scores from both sides and tenacious defending at both ends of the field. The final score of 12 points to 1 goal and 8 points does not do justice to the fantastic display of the John’s Road team and overall all agreed that it was a well deserved victory.

This was definitely a team performance from start to finish with the backs and midfield players putting in a huge effort for the full 50 mins in order to provide a great supply of ball for the forwards to prove their mettle. To score 12 points in any match is a very good return and this is testament to the hard work and clever play of all 13 players.

Sally Walker in goal was coolness personified. Her kick-outs were excellent and she made several crucial saves in the second half when Ballygarret were pushing hard for a victory. The full back line of Kate Frayne, Aoife Dwyer and Julia Dempsey made several very important interventions and protected the goal  very well throughout the match. Clara O Doherty played a captain’s part, intercepting many attacks and giving great passes to her team-mates. She was ably assisted by Kate Redmond Browne who gave an outstanding performance in defence, especially in the second half. Midfielders Eve Hession and Alannah Corcoran worked tirelessly throughout against Ballygarret’s 2 best players. They covered back and then moved forward at every opportunity and each of them deserves great credit. Sarah Murphy had one of her best games for the Mercy team. She helped out in midfield and then popped up to score 4 excellent points as well as setting up several other scores. This match couldn’t be written about without mentioning the contribution of Aoife Kelly. She scored 6 points, all of them with great skill and determination, not to mention covering back when necessary, a truly inspirational performance. She and the other forwards Sinéad Cuddihy, Sinéad Rafter and the Caoimhe O Sullivan will be the first to praise the rest of the team for their efforts. The two Sinéads and substitute Emer Mc Cormack made strong contributions for the team and Caoimhe got 2 sweet points at a crucial stage and was a major threat throughout.

This victory belongs to the whole squad of 25 players and they should be very proud of their achievement.

Panel:Clodadh Bruen, Alannah Corcoran, Sinéad Cuddihy, Rachel Curran, Aoife Dwyer, Kate Frayne, Aoife Kelly, Jodie Kent, Hannah Malone, Emer Mc Cormack, Sarah Murphy, Clara O Doherty, Caoimhe O Sullivan, Kate Redmond Browne, Julia Dempsey, Eve Hession, Emma Jones, Josephine Lonergan, Anna Marsella, Johanna North, Sadhbh Cullinane, Sinéad Rafter, Sally Walker, Sally Bruen, Liadh Dwyer.

A huge well done to our school camogie team who put up a great fight against group leaders Our lady’s Island on Thurs 19th May. The match took place in Coolcott’s Lane.

The girls were against the wind in the first half and were trailing a bit going into half time.

They did not let this deter them though and very determined Mercy side emerged for the second half. Two points from Sarah Murphy and a goal from Cody Brennan helped to narrow the gap.

The girls have put in a great effort this year at training and the matches and have really improved. We will have nearly all our players again next year so we’ll be in with a great chance! So keep coming to training girls and practise during the summer if there’s time!

On Wednesday 11th May we played a match against Rosslare in the Rackard League. The match was played in Tagoat. We won 4 goals and 1 point to no score. We all played brilliantly including Cody who scored 4 goals. It was a tough match but when Ms.Shannon and Ms.Hughes said we would get a treat, we played even better! The whole team was very surprised when we won because it was our first win.

Yesterday we played golf with Jennifer Hickey from Junior Golf Ireland. We played loads of fun golf games. Everyone had a go including Ms.Shannon, John, Kay and Mr.Gately. We played games, where if you won you would get no homework. At the end we played so well that none of us got home work! HURRAY! :) Ciara was the best at putting. Sarah, Kamila and Grethel were the best at chipping. We will be playing golf for the next couple of weeks in p.e. and hopefully John and Jennifer will come back and teach us some more about golf and play more fun golf games. We learned to play a new game called rats and rabbits. We got a huge bag of equipment for playing golf. Thanks to Jennifer Hickey, Kay Kelly and John Meyler for coming in.

Footballers Reach Semi-Final.

Posted on October 11th, 2010 in Sport by Mr. Gately  Tagged

For the second year in a row our gallant girls have reached the Rackard League semi-final following a hard earned, but deserved victory over Loreto Gorey. The match began with the Mercy girls playing into a medium breeze, so to get an early goal from the supreme “poacher” Elizabeth Connors was a great tonic. She followed this up with a second green flag a few minutes later. However this Loreto team hadn’t reached a quarter final without being able to fight their corner and they soon replied with two goals of their own from their small, but elusive forwards. Mercy replied with another goal from Caoimhe O Sullivan , but again Loreto hit back and at half time the sides were deadlocked.

The second half was a close affair, but thanks to a few excellent points from Sarah Murphy, Aoife Kelly and Connors again, the John’s Road girls opened up a good lead, but they needed every score as Gorey kept up the pressure right to the end with the final score reading: Mercy 4-6 and Loreto 4-1. Again this was a great team performance with the 5 backs Ciara Rafter, Ciara Cullinane, Aoife O Dwyer, Chloe Keeling and Caoimhe O Keeffe all working very hard for the full game. As ever Shannon Carthy was brilliant in goal, making several saves and clearances, especially in the second half. At mid-field Niamh Buckley and Sarah Murphy worked tirelessly and their hard work was carried on by all the forwards, including Clara O Doherty, Caoimhe O Sullivan and Amy Ryan who kept the ball moving towards goal with great effort and skill. Subs Hannah Malone and Kate Freyne  fitted in seemlessly when they came on and both will be even better players next year.

Mercy Footballers March On

Posted on October 6th, 2010 in Sport by Mr. Gately  Tagged

Following a well deserved victory against our near neighbours Scoil Mhuire, Coolcotts our girls football team has qualified for the quarter finals of the Rackard League. This match was played in difficult windy conditions, luckily we played with the wind in the first half and built up a good lead through great scores from Elizabeth Connors, Sarah Murphy and Aoife kelly, ably assisted by the hard working Clara O Doherty who set up several scores and combined with excellent defending from Chloe Keeling and Caoimhe O Keeffe. In the second half we came under more pressure and here the midfielders Sarah Murphy and Niamh Buckley worked tirelessly and our fullback line of Aoife Dwyer, Ciara Cullinane and Ciara Rafter came into their own. As usual Shannon Carthy in goal was as safe as houses and she made several important clearances. As well as that Caoimhe O Sullivan, Amy Ryan and Sinéad Cuddihy helped out their defence when needed and were also on hand at the the other end of the pitch.

Each one of our substitutes also got to play and Kate Freyne, Kate Redmond-Browne, Jemma Wilders,Sammy-Jo Mc Donagh, Jodie Kent,Clodagh Bruen, Rachel Curran, Margaret Connors and Hannah Malone all contributed to a great victory. This win, combined with victories against Kennedy Park and Tagmon, means that we qualify as group winners and we now await the runners-up from another group in the quarter finals. In the meantime training will continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school and on Tuesdays at lunch time for fourth class.

The Rackard League gets under way this week. We have already played and beaten Glynn/Barntown in a challenge match and we are hopeful of doing well in our other matches against Scoil Mhuire, Coolcotts, Kennedy Park and Taghmon. 4th class have also started training at lunchtime and there are several promising players here also. It is very important to practice your skills regularly.

Fine Display of Camogie from a Very Determined and Hardworking Mercy Side

Posted on March 19th, 2010 in Ms. Flynn,Ms. Shannon,Sport by Ms. Shannon  Tagged

Last Thursday 11th March our school camogie team travelled to Murrintown to participate in the mini-sevens competition. The girls played three matches against Castlebridge, Barntown and Murrintown. They did extremely well considering the strong clubs from which these schools come.

The Mercy side got off to a bit of a slow start against Castlebridge but swiftly narrowed the gap in the second half  finishing with only a goal in the difference. Our girls had a strong victory against Barntown. Again, they were narrowly beaten by a very strong Murrintown side.

Sarah Murphy (fourth class) blew us away as she scored twice from sideline pucks. Fearless Cody Brennan (fourth class) worked exceptionally hard in the forwards and scored two astonishing goals. Elizabeth Connors (fifth class) had a great game in mid-field covering a lot of ground. Sarah McKenna (sixth class) and Emer McCormack (fourth class) formed a super partnership in the backs and instantly cleared every ball that came their way.

The Mercy panel included:

Niamh Buckley(fifth class) Cody Brennan(fourth class)Sarah Murphy(fourth class) Elizibeth Connors(fifth class) Sarah Mckenna(sixth class) Emer McCormack(fourth class) Kate Frayne (fourth class)Ciara Cullinane(fifth class)Ciara O’Reardon(fifth class)Katie Stone(fifth class)and Caoimhe O’Sullivan(fourth class).

Ms.Shannon and Ms.Flynn would like to thank all the girls for their dedication in training .They also want to thank the sixth class girls  who helped out in training.

Well done girls .The future of  Wexford camogie is alive and well in the Mercy school!!!!

MERCY REACH FINAL AFTER THRILLER

Posted on November 3rd, 2009 in Latest News,Sport by Mr. Gately

The roller coaster ride for the girls  and their supporters continued in Oylegate on Thursday evening when we overcame a very fancied Ballygarret team after extra-time. On a lovely evening for football both teams served up a feast of good football and nail-biting drama, with the lead exchanging hands on several occasions. This was truly a team performance with all the players putting in a huge effort and the subs playing an important part on the sideline with support, water and encouragement for the weary players. Again our backline was outstanding, every one played their hearts out, despite some tough tackling and very skillful play fron the Ballygarret forwards. Elisa Valadez was very unlucky to concede a couple of goals, on each occasion her view was blocked by a group of players. However in the second half she was as safe as houses and her kick-outs and clearances were very effective. Our full back line have been brilliant in every game and here again they excelled. Hazel, Trudy and Niamh never paniced under pressure and always seemed to do the right thing. Our half back line of Eimear Buckley and Lena Browne were equally outstanding. You would never know that Eimear had just come back from injury. Time and again she repelled attacks with great positioning and fearless defending. Beside her Lena (our captain on the day) was first to almost every ball and played her heart out. In Midfield Laura Bruen and Niamh Walsh inter changed with great effect. Once one got tired chasing and soloing the other took over. Between them they won a huge amount of possession and it was never wasted. Several times they seemed to have run out of energy, only to power back again in a few moments. Both also weighed in with some vital scores. Hayley Roche as the other midfielder never got any rest and was still running as hard as ever, even in extra-time. A fantastic effort from Hayley was also rewarded with a vital point in the first period of extra time. Each one of the forwards contributed so much to the team effort, not just on the score board, but with constant movement and wonderful pressure on their players. Sadhbh Whitty seems to get better with each game and Aoife Kelly won some wonderful ball from a much older and taller opponent. Most importantly each of these two players always used their possession wisely. Sarah Murphy came on for Aoife Kelly and even though she was not playing in her usual position she performed very well and never let the side down; Sarah will be a star of the future. This leaves the deadly duo of Bronwyn Murphy and Elizabeth Connors in the full-forward line. Again and again they were thwarted by a crowded defence and an excellent goalkeeper, but they never gave up, Bronwyn eventually bagging the goal that her efforts deserved and Elizabeth slotting 2 excellent points. An historic victory was achieved by the narrowest of margins (1-9 to 2-5); now this team that never gives up can look forward to a great final against Horeswood on Thursday in Tagmon.

Many thanks to the teachers and parents who turned up to support this gallant team on the day, we hope to have many more supporters for the final.
