Mercy School Wins Garden Award.

Recently we were delighted and honoured to win the “Platinum” award (first prize) in the schools’ competition of the annual Wexford In Bloom awards. This was a tremendous achievement for such a new garden and it is a testament to all of the hard work from our volunteers and Stephen our caretaker, the wonderful design and planting of Betsy Hickey and James Ginnell and the support of our Parents’ Council, our BOM and the EPA. It is also great news for our Green Schools Committee lead by Ms. English and Ms. Hughes. Come along any time and visit “An Gairdín Glas” and see why we won.

Rackard League Update

Posted on October 14th, 2012 in Latest News,Sport by Mr. Gately  Tagged

Following wins against Bree, Horeswood and Glynn-Barntown the Mercy girls are currently going very well in the Rackard League. The match against Horeswood in Campile was played in difficult conditions and we had to play into a strong breeze in the first half. Thanks to some excellent defending from all 13 players we were level at half-time and with the aid of some early scores in the second-half we emerged winners by 5 points. The match against Glynn-Barntown was a home match and we emerged comfortable winners after a great team performance. All subs also managed to get on for some of the match and they will all benefit from the experience. Our last match is against Fethard and again it will be at home. If we manage to emerge victorious we will be in the county semi-final for the 4th year in a row. Well done to all the players for their efforts so far, but the toughest matches have yet to come.

New Green Flag Theme – Bio-diverstiy.

Posted on October 2nd, 2012 in Green Flag by Mrs. English  Tagged

The Mercy School will soon embark on their new Green Flag theme of Bio-diversity.

So what exactly is Bio-diversity?

Biodiversity is the huge variety and variation of life that surrounds us.  Biodiverstiy is

essential in keeping the environment healthy and fit for human life.  The first and

most important objective of the theme is to develop awareness and understand

its importance to our everyday lives.  This can be achieved through improving or

preserving our local biodiversity, in An Ghairdín Glas and at home.  We hope to

increase the richness and numbers of species in the school garden.  This can be

achieved through the building of the Bug Hotel.

We will continue to work on our other themes of litter/waste…energy….water…

and travel.

Gaelic Football

Posted on September 19th, 2012 in Latest News by Mr. Gately  Tagged

The Rackard League Girls’ Football competition has started already. It seems only a short time ago since we lifted the cup as “Roinn B” champions and now we are in Roinn A. Thankfully a lot of the girls have been training and playing with their clubs during the Summer and we can already see the improvements. We played Scoil Mhuire and Glynn Barntown in challenge games recently, winning both. Then the first big challenge came on Sept 19th in our first league match away to Bree. After a very good all round team performance we emerged  victorious by 8pts. All 13 starting players performed very well with the backs playing so well that they prevented Bree scoring. Our midfielders kept the ball flowing to the forwards and several of them managed to get on the score-board. All 9 subs also got to play a part so all were happy on the bus home. A special mention to Aisling O Sullivan from Rang 3 who made her debut in goal for the Mercy.

What a fantastic day we had on June 27th (despite the weather) as we had 3 different events on the one day. First up was our “Damhsathon” and concert, followed closely by the raising of our 5th green flag and finishing up with the official opening of our school garden “An Ghairdín Glas”. Thanks to everyone who helped organise the day and those who turned up to support it. It was a great way to finish up another exciting year in The Mercy School.

Monday 21st of May was a memorable day for the Mercy School as the Green Flag committee travelled to Croke Park in Dublin to receive their fifth Green Flag.  The school has been working on a travel theme over the past two years, with children being encouraged to walk to school especially every Wednesday.  Valerie, Sinéad Rafter and Ali Gunning were accompanied by Ms English to the awards ceremony.  We were all treated to a lovely lunch first upon our arrival and this was then followed by the presentation.  The girls had great fun with the interactive quiz which An Taisce had organised.  A great day was had by all!

The raising of our fifth Green Flag will take place on Wednesday 27th June.

Hope to see you all there.

Rose of Tralee Visits

Posted on March 6th, 2012 in Latest News by Mr. Gately  Tagged

On March 4th Tara Talbot the current Rose of  Tralee paid a special visit to our school. She was welcomed by the School Council, Mr. Gately and her good friend Ms. Mary Kehoe, the Wexford Rose who is currently working in the school. Tara was really impressed with all the questions asked by the children, with our wonderful choir, under the direction of Ms. Hughes and the fabulous reception she received from all the pupils and staff in our halla. Tara was born in Dublin, but she moved to Queensland, Australia when she was 5yrs old. While it was her first visit to Wexford town, she had visited other parts of Wexford before.

WOW Day 22nd February 2012

Well done to all those children and teachers that made a great effort in walking to school today.  The weather unfortunately wasn’t very kind to us but still everyone made a great effort.

The Mad shoes were amazing and lot of hard work went into decorating them.  We all went to the halla in the morning and each class had an opportunity to show off their fancy footwear!  Don’t discard your mad shoes as we will have another Mad shoe Day after Easter.  Fingers crossed for finer weather.

WOW day Wednesday 22nd February 2012

Posted on February 20th, 2012 in Green Flag by Mrs. English  Tagged

We are relaunching our WOW day this Wednesday.  We are asking everyone (including teachers) to walk to school on Wednesday and every other Wednesday from then on.  If you can’t walk to school from your house maybe you park and stride or cycle.  It is a great way of getting some exercise and it can also be great fun!  Mad shoe day will also take place on Wednesday.  Who will have the maddest pair of shoes on the day?  I think it will be one of the teachers but I could be wrong.

So dust down those runners everyone and lets get walking.

Chess is going from strength to strength in the school, but we still need some more adult volunteers. If you have a relation or friend who would be willing to give just one hour each week  to the school it would be a great help to Therese and Senan. Just contact the school with the details or if you want further info.
