We have just completed another successful Rainbows Programme in our school. We facilitated 3 groups of children, and the overall experience was very enjoyable for all involved. Parents/guardians commented that their child loved coming to the sessions every week, and noticed a general improvement in their child’s wellbeing and/or behaviour.
Sessions, which took place after school every Tuesday, were facilitated by Audrey Mc Hugh, Geraldine Dunne and Miriam Hill.
What is Rainbows?
Rainbows offers young people who have experienced the death of a close relative, a separation in the family, or other painful changes in their family the opportunity to participate in a 14 week Peer support Programme. This already takes place in over 500 schools and parishes throughout the country.
When something significant happens in a family, the entire family is affected. If a parent dies, or parents separate, or a painful loss occurs, not only do the parents grieve, the children do also.
Grief is an expression of love and a normal human reaction to a significant loss. Children may find it difficult to verbalise their feelings of grief because of their age and inexperience. It may surface in their behaviour, schoolwork and emotional well-being.
RAINBOWS is a support group that helps children put their feelings into words, work through their grief, build a stronger sense of self-esteem, and begin to accept what has taken place in the family.
RAINBOWS is not a counselling group. It is a safe, confidential setting where children will share their grief-associated feelings with each other and with trained facilitators.
Many thanks to the dedicated facilitators for donating their time and energy into training for and running the Rainbows Programme.
We hope to continue our Programme in the next school year. Information regarding this will be circulated in September.
