Easter in Poland

In Poland we bring a basket to church on Easter Saturday. There is bread, ham, salt, eggs, sheep shaped sweets and mayonnaise in the basket. The priest blesses the food and we bring it home. On Easter Sunday we go to church at six o’clock in the morning. We remember that Jesus died for us. When we come home we eat the food that the priest blessed. We boil eggs and decorate them. We put these into the basket too. We also give these decorated eggs as gifts to other people. Written by Nikola and Weronika.

St CasimirSaint Casimir is the patron saint of Poland and Lithuania. He was born in Wawel in Krakow. His father was the King of Poland. When he was 13 he went to Hungary to fight to become the King of Hungary, but he did not win. When his brother became King of Bohemia, Casimir was to be the next King of Poland. He became very sick with a lung infection, and he died when he was only 25 years old in 1484. People say that his prayers helped them to win an important battle against the Russians. When he died, blind people who visited his tomb were able to see, and lame people were able to walk. He was named a saint in 1522. His Feast Day is March 4th. By Dominika, Weronika and Nikola.

Christmas in Poland.

Santa Claus comes to children in Poland on the 6th and 24th of December.

On Christmas Eve we give presents. We put up a Christmas tree. We also have a special meal. We are supposed to eat 12 different things like beetroot, carrots, salad and lots of fish. We are not allowed to eat chicken or ham.We give wafer to one another ( like when a priest gives out Communion). Santa comes after our Christmas Eve meal. He wears a red suit and he comes just like in Ireland.

In Poland we have snow at Christmas. Every child goes outside to play in the snow. We build snowmen.

Christmas in Moldova.

In Moldova, Christmas is a very important celebration. On Christmas night  (December 25th)  everybody sits down for a Christmas meal. We eat chicken and pigs trotters and the adults drink wine. My granny bakes me a cake. Santa brings presents to  the children after the meal. The children open their presents and play with them.  The adults open presents too. Everybody is very happy.  We go to bed very late on Christmas Night. The weather is very cold and it snows. The children love to play in the snow. They play with sleds, build snowmen, and have snowball fights. Christmas in Moldova is great fun. I am looking forward to spending Christmas in Ireland this year.
